Key Readings
-
Mayer, R. E. (2009). Multimedia learning (2nd ed.). Cambridge University Press.
This book provided the core multimedia principles—such as coherence, signaling, redundancy, and contiguity—that guided the design of my graphics/layout project, audio project, and multimedia module. It helped me make intentional choices about when and how to combine text, audio, and visuals to support learning.
-
Clark, R. C., & Mayer, R. E. (2016). e-Learning and the science of instruction: Proven guidelines for consumers and designers of multimedia learning (4th ed.). Wiley.
Clark and Mayer’s guidelines reinforced the importance of aligning multimedia with clear instructional goals, managing cognitive load, and designing practice opportunities with feedback. These ideas influenced how I structured my multimedia project for secondary math teachers and how I evaluated the effectiveness of my media choices.
-
Moreno, R., & Mayer, R. E. (2000). A coherence effect in multimedia learning: The case for minimizing irrelevant sounds in the design of multimedia instructional messages. Journal of Educational Psychology, 92(1), 117–125.
This article emphasized the negative impact of extraneous audio and sound effects on learning, which directly shaped how I approached narration, music, and sound design in my mini-podcast project. It reminded me to include only those audio elements that clearly support the instructional message.
Web Resources & Tools
-
Cubicle Ninjas. 15 things to know before designing a website. https://cubicleninjas.com/15-things-to-know-before-designing-website/
This resource helped me think strategically about layout, visual hierarchy, and overall user experience before building my multimedia project and ePortfolio. It reminded me to focus on clarity, simplicity, and intentional design choices—principles that influenced my navigation structure and consistent visual style.
-
Learning by Click. (2018, August 17). The instructional design models that best fit – ASSURE model. Learning by Click. https://learningbyclick.wordpress.com/2018/08/17/the-instructional-design-models-that-best-fit-assure-model/
This article provided a clear breakdown of the ASSURE model and reinforced how learner analysis and structured planning guide effective instructional materials. It helped me align my multimedia project with a more systematic approach—especially in selecting media, engaging learners, and evaluating the instructional effectiveness of my design.
-
W3Schools. (n.d.). W3Schools online web tutorials. https://www.w3schools.com/
W3Schools provided quick-reference support while developing my multimedia module and ePortfolio, especially for reviewing HTML, CSS, and layout concepts. The clear examples and interactive format made it easy to troubleshoot code and refine the visual structure of my site.
